I can't count the number of times I was given a perfect diet plan that was meant to solve my eating issues, as if the problem was me not understanding that eating huge quantities of food in one go was bad for me!
Whilst nutrition can be taken to another level in terms of how it restores balance in the body and mind, for anyone with a history of yo-yo dieting and binge eating, it's essential to understand first that it is possible to eat all foods, otherwise they will always remain a trigger. They key is learning to become truly present with what you are eating. When you do this, it's hard to go too far off track.
I’m Olivia Shakespear, a nutritional therapist and health coach, and I help people just like you find real peace with food and with your body. Binge eating recovery or overcoming disordered eating can seem almost impossible if you've been on the journey a long time, but it is absolutely possible and can even be fun! There is such a lack of understanding around eating issues and I love nothing more than helping people free themselves of these destructive patterns.
I struggled with food from an early age and secret eating turned into even more secretive binges. It's painful to hide yourself away from the world to consume large quantities of food, and it left me with low self-esteem and a very unhealthy relationship with my body. I tried diet after diet, not realising that it's the dieting mentality that can lead to more destructive cycles.
The plus point was my obsession with all things food also made me interested in health and nutrition. I ended up studying nutritional therapy at the College of Naturopathic Nutrition in London, as I thought this would solve all the issues. Understanding real nutrition did move me forward in so many ways, but it was when I finally started to look at what was really going on before I pushed the sod it button and put this together with the nutritional therapy, that I finally moved on.
I don't believe there is one right way for all, but I do know that education is key. Understanding why you engage in disordered eating habits and how nutrition impacts this is central to the process, and I’ll support you every step of the way.
